Heart and infinity swirl on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black heart sits at the centre of a thin, looping infinity-style swirl that trails off to both sides. The linework is fine and the heart is filled in solid black, with no visible shading or colour. The wrist is photographed close up, with several silver bangles stacked above and below the tattoo against a warm, softly lit background.

The clerk at the Haparanda crossing had stamped three hundred papers since dawn, and his thumb had gone numb around the rubber handle. He did not look up when the next card slid under the glass. He read it anyway, because it was not a passport. It was a laminated seasonal permit of the sort the mill owners in Tornio used to hand out, and across one corner someone had drawn a figure eight lying on its side, with a solid black heart set in the middle of the loop like a coal left in a grate.

Tomas knew that loop. His mother had worn it inked onto a paper label sewn inside her coat, and she had told him it was the mark for a promise that never runs out, the kind you make to someone on the far side of a river. He had not seen her since the spring the bridge flooded. He turned the card over. On the back, in soft pencil, was a name he had not expected: Elin Sormunen, a date three winters gone, and the words 'Come back the long way round.'
The queue behind the coach shuffled. A man in a wool cap coughed and asked whether the window was open or not. Tomas stamped the permit, slid it back across the counter, and tapped the wood twice, a signal his supervisor had never explained and everyone on the crossing understood. The man nodded and walked on. Tomas took up his pen and, in the margin of the ledger beside the day's date, began a small loop, and he did not lift the pen until it met itself.
