A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harold had painted the same ampersand forty-one times before Mrs Ashdown asked him to make it kinder. The sign was for Pelham and Sons, cider and perry, and it was to hang on the barn gable at the bottom of the orchard lane. She wanted the joining stroke softened, like a bow on a parcel. He told her an ampersand was a knot, not a bow, and a knot was meant to hold. She paid him in half-crowns and said she would think on it.

By the last week of August the wasps were drunk on windfalls and the ladders leaned against the Bramleys like tired men. Harold worked from a plank slung between two stepladders, a flat brush loaded with black enamel and a rag tucked in his belt. He pressed hard on the loop, then eased off so the stroke thinned like a hare's tail. The lower limb he saved until last, because it was the part that could go wrong. When the arrow went through it, he drew the shaft along the curve in one long pull and let the head point past the edge of the board, down the lane, towards the pickers' bicycles.

Mrs Ashdown came out with a jug of squash and stood at the foot of the ladder, shading her eyes. She looked for a long time. "It isn't kind," she said at last. "But I can see it means to stay put."

Harold climbed down, wiped his fingers on the rag and poured himself a glass. He would tell her in the morning that the arrow was the cider's way of getting out of the orchard, and she would pretend to believe him.
