Infinity symbol on the lower back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single black infinity symbol sits on bare skin in the lower back area, to the right of a white bikini strap. The outline is a smooth, even line of solid black ink with no visible shading. The warm skin tones and soft focus of the background make the tattoo the clear focal point of the frame.

The reunion is held in the sports hall of the old school in Hereford, and someone has wheeled the maths board out from storage and propped it against the climbing bars. Nobody is sure whose idea that was. Mr Pryce, retired now and wearing a cardigan the colour of wet slate, sits near the urn with a biro in his top pocket and watches the room fill with people you haven't seen since Year Eleven. You recognise the walk of Dani Okafor before you recognise her face, and you already know she's going to be late.

In Year Nine, Pryce drew a sideways eight in chalk and told you it was a loop with no end. Dani said that was the dullest thing she had ever heard, then spent the rest of the lesson copying it onto the back of her planner, going round and round until the page tore. You kept the chalk dust on your sleeve all afternoon. Later, behind the bins by the science block, she told you she'd never be the sort of person who stayed in one place, and you believed her, because at fourteen that sounded like a plan.

She arrives at half past eight with her coat still buttoned and a small paper parcel in her hand. Inside is a stub of chalk, worn down to the size of a thumb, the last one from Pryce's old tin. She says she nicked it the week she left and has carried it through three flats and two countries. She asks you to draw the eight on the board, so you pick up the chalk and do it, slowly, the way he taught you. The room goes quiet. Halfway round the loop your hand decides the crossing should stay open, and you leave a gap there, a small white space where the line could keep going.
