The rain has been coming down since six, and the bare-root stall under the iron awning is the only one on Tanner's Row still selling anything green. You have spent the morning pricing whips of hazel and a crate of crab apple cuttings, wrapping each in newspaper gone soft at the corners. The man from the council waits by the fishmonger's with his umbrella furled, watching the gutter fill.

He wants the old ash, the split one that the survey marked for felling in March. You tell him you will not sell him its roots. He says the roots were never anyone's to sell. You point instead at the ledger on the upturned crate, the thin pencil line you drew under each name you have ever planted, and the little loops beside the ones that came back after a hard frost. He laughs at the loops, then stops laughing when he sees the rain has got into the pages.
