Black ink tattoo of a treble clef and bass clef forming a heart shape, placed on the lower abdomen above jeans.

Treble and bass clef heart on the stomach

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo of a treble clef and a bass clef, merged so that the curves of the two clefs form the outline of a heart. The bass clef's dots sit to the right, and the design is set on bare skin of the lower abdomen. The solid, uniform black lines sit against pale skin, with a white lace top and dark denim in the background.

The last tram had long gone up Briggate when Mr Okonedo rang the bell at the back of the print shop, a folded napkin in his coat and rain dripping from his hat. I was halfway through the trombone parts for a band in Pudsey, the lamp pulled low over the bench. He did not want the parts. He wanted a title page, and he wanted it by Saturday.

He opened the napkin under my lamp. Someone had sketched a treble clef and a bass clef in biro so that the top curl of the treble swung round to form one lobe of a heart, and the bass clef's lower curve closed the other side. Its two dots sat off to the right, like stray notes that had decided to stay. His wife had drawn it years ago, he said, on the back of a bus ticket, and had hummed the cello part into the kitchen every morning after.

We worked until the windows greyed. I drew the treble clef freehand, as my father taught me, then bent the staff lines around it until they curved like ribs. The bass clef took three attempts. Each time I lifted the nib he watched the paper with the patience of a man who had sat through a thousand rehearsals. When the two clefs finally met, neither one wholly itself, he laid his palm flat on the bench and said nothing for a long while.

He paid in silver and carried the proof home in a cardboard tube. Later I found the napkin he had left behind, and beneath the drawing, in faint pencil, a single bar of four quarter notes, the last one held with a little tail that looked like a question. I still cannot play it without hearing him ask it.
