Cactus heart with flower on an upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A cactus shaped like an anatomical heart fills the upper arm, with a layered flower bloom sitting at its upper left. The ribs of the cactus are outlined in bold black linework, while the spines, petals and shaded areas are built up from fine stippled dots. The black and grey photograph shows the tattoo from two angles side by side.

The cactus flowered the night the sea fret rolled into Gull House, and by breakfast the whole top landing smelled of crushed lemons. Mrs Pilling found you on the stairs with a tray and told you not to touch it. It sat in a chipped brown pot on the sill of Room Six, a squat, lopsided thing her late husband had grown from a cutting. He had called it the heart, because it was stubborn and bruised and, he swore, only beat once a year, on the night it bloomed.

You were the new lodger, paying for a room with a view of the harbour wall, so you said nothing when she pulled a chair up and watched it for hours. "Ted never let anyone repot it," she said. "Said it would forget him." The bloom was layered like a rosette of pale paper, its petals stacked over the spines, and by noon the spines had caught the light and thrown tiny shadows across the wallpaper. Gulls argued on the roof outside. Neither of you moved.
That afternoon you lifted the pot to check the roots, since the soil had gone grey and hard, and a folded slip of card slid out from beneath it. Ted's handwriting had faded to the colour of weak tea: Keep her watered till the boats are in. Mrs Pilling read it twice, then laughed, a short surprised sound you had not heard from her before, and asked you to fetch the watering can.
You filled it at the scullery tap. When you came back she had already tipped water into the pot, and the flower was closing slowly, petal by petal, like a hand folding around something it meant to keep.
