Anatomical heart in a zipper on chest

Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo

A realistic anatomical heart in red, grey and dark tones sits within a zipper design that opens across the upper chest. Soft shading gives the heart volume, while the zipper teeth and pull are rendered in grey with metallic highlights. Orange and green flame-like shapes sit behind the heart, and a pendant necklace and two hands framing the lower chest complete the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara had been trying to free the zip on her grandfather's oilskin since the first frost, and the brass pull would not budge. Out in the walled garden the nasturtiums had gone to seed, orange and rust spilling over the path where he used to stand with his pipe and call the weather. She set the coat across the potting bench and worked the teeth with a bent pin, the way he had taught her, patient and sideways.

Below the kitchen window the old tap dripped into a tin bucket. Her neighbour Ilse leaned over the wall with a basket of runner beans and asked whether it was true the Harrow boy had gone off to the mill towns. Mara said she didn't know. She was thinking about the lining inside the coat, which had a pocket she had never found, sewn shut along one side with waxed thread, and about how the zip had been pressed flat on purpose, its teeth bent over after the last time it was worn.

The pin slipped and caught. The teeth parted in a long clean run from the collar to the hem, and inside the lining, folded small and dry as a pressed leaf, lay a letter in her grandfather's cramped capitals. It was not addressed to her. It was addressed to a woman called Ruth, and it said only that the heart kept better shut, and that the fire could stay in the garden where it belonged.

Mara read it twice, then carried it out to the nasturtiums and set it down among the seed heads. She left the zip open. The wind came up off the fields and rattled the bucket, and for once she let the coat hang as it was.
