Watercolour anatomical heart on chest

Chest · Mixed · Photo

A detailed anatomical heart sits centrally on the upper chest, outlined in dark linework with the chambers and vessels defined. Loose washes of blue, red, orange and purple bleed past the outline, with splashes and streaks of colour around the heart. The wearer's face is out of frame, and the subject is shown against a light, slightly blue-grey top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Lowry had left his sketchbook on the piano again, and I was the only one at the Pavilion who'd look inside it before the band packed up. It was 1956, the last waltz gone and the floor still sticky with spilt lemonade. Page after page of hearts, drawn in pencil with the chambers labelled in a careful copperplate hand, each valve picked out like the ribs of a fan.

I'd been painting the backdrop for the summer season, a harbour scene that never quite looked like Margate, and I had a tin of watercolours going soft in the damp. So when Mr Lowry asked if I'd tint his hearts, I said yes before he'd finished the question. He wanted the blood kept honest, he said, the way the medical men did it, but the rest could be whatever I liked.

I washed cobalt over the left ventricle and let it bleed past the outline, then tipped a little vermilion into the wet edge so it spread like something alive. He watched from the piano stool without saying a word, and when the purple came down the aorta he laughed out loud, the first time I'd heard him do it.

The caretaker found the sketchbook under the stage the next morning, open to the one I'd painted. Mr Lowry had already caught the train back to Leeds. I kept the book, and the page still has a faint sheen at the edges where the washes never quite dried.
