Feathered wings forming a heart on the forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded tattoo of two feathered wings curving up to form the outline of a heart, with the heart's centre left as bare skin. The feathers are drawn with dark outlines and grey shading that gives them depth, and the design sits centrally on the lower arm. A silver coin rests above the tattoo, and the image is taken straight on with even indoor lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shilling had been Tom's lucky piece since he was a boy, and I kept it in my apron pocket the whole week the rescue men worked the east drift. Every morning I walked to the pit gates with the bread tin under my arm, and every morning the cage came up with someone else's husband in it.

Mrs Garside from Ash Row brought me a drawing on the back of a Co-op docket. Her youngest had gone to the ink man in Barnsley and come home with wings on his arm, and she said I ought to have something made too, something to hold. She'd drawn it in pencil first: two wings lifting from a point at the bottom, curling over the top, and between them a heart with nothing inside it. "Leave the middle clear," she said. "That's where he'll be kept, love, not down there."

I had it done in the back room over Pryce's bakery, the man bent low over my arm with a needle that buzzed like a wasp in a jam jar. It hurt less than I expected. He shaded each feather darker at the root so they looked like they were lifting, and when he wiped the beads away the heart stayed white as a saucer.

Tom came up on the ninth day. Not in the cage. He walked out of the lamp room on his own feet, black to the eyebrows, and the first thing he did was take the shilling from my apron and close my fingers over it. He said it had kept him company in the dark. I looked down at the drawing I was wearing and, for the first time since Monday, I had something to fill the gap with.
