Anatomical heart on a globe with leaves

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

An anatomical heart with a sprig of leaves growing from its top sits above a globe showing continents in green, blue and orange. Bold black outlines and striped shading give the heart a dimensional, hand-drawn look, with pink, orange and blue tones. Partial tattoos of a flower and a bird frame the edges of the photograph.

Sit closer, the wind up here steals half of what I say. Every carter who crosses Hollin Gap hears this one, and every carter swears the cold got into his ears before the end.

A mapmaker named Tobias Quill was paid to draw the whole world on one sheet of vellum, stretched over a wooden ball. He laboured eleven winters at it. When he finished, he found the coastlines had softened under his brush, the seas running into the land like wet ink, so he set the globe on his windowsill to dry and went out to the orchard to clear his head.

When he came back, a sprig had pushed up through the pole the globe was mounted on, green leaves unfurling from the top of the wood. Beneath them the continents had taken on colour: Africa in warm orange, the oceans striped the blue of a winter dawn. He could not say who had done it. His daughter Hesper said only that the globe had been beating like something alive, and she had pressed her ear to it and heard a heart.

So Tobias did what every man does when the world is too big for one table. He carried the globe over this pass, one step at a time, and at the summit he set it down facing the way he had come. He told the first traveller he met to keep walking until the leaves grew over their own shadows. Some say it is still up there in the snow past the cairn, its leaves turning gold each autumn. Mind the third stone on your left. It moves.
