Globe, suitcase and aeroplane on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a desk globe on a stand, resting on a suitcase with red corner straps, surrounded by grey clouds, red rays and a small red aeroplane. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid, smoothly shaded fills in green, brown, orange and grey. The design is centred on the globe, with the suitcase anchoring the base of the composition against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ivy Harrowby had already packed the globe when the man from the bank came to collect the piano. She wrapped it in her late husband's cardigan, the one with leather buttons, and nestled it between two pairs of brogues in the brown case that had gone to Margate in 1952 and nowhere since.

Her plan was simple enough. She would take the 9.40 from Crewe, change at Birmingham, and fly from Heathrow to a place she had only ever found by spinning the globe with one finger and stopping it with her nail. Bernard had always said Africa looked like a sleeping dog. She wanted to see whether it still did.

At the check-in desk a young clerk with a lanyard weighed the case, frowned at the red corner straps, and asked whether she would like to check it through. Ivy held on to the handle. "The world is in there," she said. He laughed, then stopped laughing when she didn't, and he stuck a little paper aeroplane onto the tag without asking, the sort children collect.

Somewhere over the clouds she unfastened the straps on her knee and lifted the lid. The globe sat in the dark, a little dented, its green paint rubbed thin near the Sahara. She turned it slowly with one finger until the dog's head came up under the cabin light, and she laughed out loud, so that the man beside her offered her a boiled sweet.
