Anatomical heart with grenade on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A realistic-looking anatomical heart with visible vessels and a shaded red and purple body is joined by a green and brass grenade with a ring pull. The heart has bold black outlines and smooth gradient shading, with pale tan highlights on the upper left. The tattoo fills the frame on the upper arm against plain skin.

The net came up heavy off Flamborough, and Ruth Haldane knew by the way it swung that it wasn't fish. Someone had dragged a Mills bomb out of the sixties and kept it in the sea ever since.

Nobody wanted to touch it. Denny stood over it with his cap in his fist and said the pin was still in, which was the only mercy going, and that the thing had been rusting into the seabed since before he was born. Ruth crouched beside it. The lever had flattened against the body, and the ring at the top had gone dull brass, worn smooth by some other man's thumb a long time ago.
She thought about her brother, who had sailed out of this same harbour at nineteen and never come back to the boats. He used to tell her a heart is just a pump with good manners, and a grenade is a heart that has decided to stop being polite. She had not understood him then. She did now, with the cold coming up through her knees.
They radioed the coastguard, and the coastguard radioed Hull, and by evening a lean man in a yellow suit lifted the thing into a steel box while the crew watched from the rail. Denny never mentioned the net again. But the next morning Ruth found the brass ring hooked over the wheelhouse door, where someone had tied it with fishing twine, and she left it there.
