Anatomical heart with candle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of an anatomical heart with its vessels and flaps drawn in fine lines, set above an oval window showing a lit candle in a holder on a wooden surface. The heart and frame use bold outlines with stippled dotwork shading, and the glow around the flame is built from dense dots. The image is a close, straight-on photograph in black ink and grey tones against plain skin.

The generator coughed twice and gave up somewhere past the dressing tent, and Ida Venn stood in the mud with a box of matches in her coat pocket, counting tent pegs the way her father had once counted debts. Forty-one people had been paid in full that week. Forty-two if you counted the goat.

The Halloran Brothers' Travelling Show had closed its last Saturday in Wem and was limping towards a winter ground nobody had booked. The big top still had its red and gold, though the gold had gone the colour of weak tea. Ida went to the caravan where old Teodor kept the company's odds and ends in a biscuit tin: the ledger, a tiger's tooth from a beast that died in 1961, and a wax model of a human heart, cracked along one side, that the strongman's mother had carried across two borders in her handbag.
She carried the heart and a candle stub into the ring. The lamps were dead and the canvas sagged overhead like a wet sheet. She set the wax heart on the sawdust, wedged the candle into a tin holder beside it, and struck a match that took three tries in the draught. The flame made a small room of light in the gloom, and the ones who had stayed came and sat on the rail: the juggler with his bad hip, the trapeze girl holding her shoes, the boy who had been learning the drum.
Teodor came last with the ledger under his arm. "We can't pay the feed," he said. "No," said Ida. "But we can sit with the light until it goes out." They sat. By morning the candle had burned down to a puddle, the wax heart had softened at its edges, and the tent smelled of tallow and wet canvas. Nobody had mentioned leaving.
