Ship in a bottle on the calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A three-masted sailing ship with full sails sits inside a bottle outline, with a sun and stylised clouds above and rolling waves at the base of the bottle. The work uses dense black linework and fine hatching to build shading across the sails, sea and sky, with no colour ink. The bottle fills the frame vertically on a lower leg, with the design following the curve of the calf.

Dear Sister Hild,

The bottle came in on the spring tide, wedged among the kelp below the north wall, and Brother Osric fished it out with a gaff before the water could take it back. It was green glass, thick as a thumb at the base, its cork sealed over with pitch. Inside was a ship under full sail, drawn in pen on a strip of vellum no wider than my little finger. I have never seen a hand so patient. Every sail is ruled with fine lines, and the sea beneath is curled into waves the way we curl the initials in the Dunmere Psalter.
Prior Anselm wanted it burned, as anything from beyond the causeway is suspect, but I asked to keep it in the scriptorium where the light is good. I spent three evenings with a glass and a sharpened quill copying the rigging, the seven shrouds, the flag the wind has torn to ribbons. There is a line of writing on the reverse, faint and brown, reading only: Tell the sun the sails are holding. I have no idea who sent it, or whether they believed a bottle could cross the grey water to any shore that would answer.
I have decided to write back. Not to the sender, who is surely long drowned, but to the sea itself, which seems to have carried the message better than any of us could. Tomorrow I will cork a clean jar with a scrap of our own psalter and give it to the tide at the turn. If it reaches you, Sister, you will know it came from the brother who kept the ship.
Yours in the hours, Brother Wulfric
