Anatomical heart with moon and stars
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A white line drawing of an anatomical heart with its aorta and vessels at the top, set against a plain black background. The left side is rendered with fine parallel hatching and cross lines, while the right side is a solid black panel scattered with a crescent moon, stars and dots. The design is centred and uses only black and white, with no body part visible.

The moon on the Crown and Anchor sign had lost its paint on the left side, so Dev climbed the ladder at half past two with a tin of enamel and a brush he had cut down with scissors. Below him Leeds was doing what it did after midnight: a taxi idling at the rank, a gull fighting a chip paper along Briggate. He had been told the sign needed finishing before the brewery van came at six, and he had been told this by a man who did not say please.

He worked the crescent first, the way his father had taught him, thin strokes that did not need to be perfect because the streetlight would fill in the rest. The stars came after. He put them in loose clusters where the old paint had flaked, and each one he made with five quick points, the way a child draws them. Somewhere a window went dark and then another went bright. He thought about his mother describing a scan she had seen at the infirmary, how the great vessels had looked like roots under wet soil, and how she had talked about it for a week without once saying she was frightened.
By five the sky was finished. The hatched oak panel beside it, the anchor and the old grain of the boards, looked plain next to the night he had made. He came down the ladder with paint on his cuffs and sat on the kerb. A woman in a green coat stopped and looked up at the sign for a long time. "That's new," she said. "It's the first thing I've seen tonight that isn't broken." He nodded and did not tell her the moon was only paint, because she seemed to know already.
