Anatomical heart with stethoscope on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A detailed anatomical heart sits on the upper arm, wrapped by a purple and silver stethoscope and topped with a white nurse's cap bearing a red cross. The heart uses red, blue and yellowish tones with soft shading on the muscle and vessels, and blue tubing for the veins and arteries. The design is centred on the arm and fills most of the frame, with a teal top visible at the edges.

Mind the step, the lino's wet from the mop, and keep your voice down, because Ward Seven only sleeps when nobody's laughing in it. Right. Where was I? Ah yes, the night Sister Agnes Holloway heard a heart through the wall.

It was the winter the boiler at St Cuthbert's packed in, so the wards ran on paraffin heaters and bad tempers. Agnes had nights on Ward Seven, forty beds and one stethoscope she'd bought herself from a pawnshop in Leeds, its purple tubing gone soft as liquorice. She wore it looped round her neck like a rosary, and the porters teased her for it. She never minded. A stethoscope, she said, was the only honest thing in the building. It told you what was happening, not what the chart wanted.
Around three, a bed in the side room began to rattle its rails. Old Mr Tennant, who had been quiet since teatime, sat bolt upright with his hand flat on his chest, saying the beat had gone wrong. Agnes pressed the cold disc to his ribs, shut her eyes and counted. The radiator knocked, the drip ticked, the monitor blinked its little green lights. She found it: a stumble, a rush, then steady again. She told him it would be all right, and for once she was right.
Come morning, the cap she'd pinned on for luck had slipped over one ear, its red cross worn pale from washing. She went home, slept through the milk round, and came back that evening to write four words on the back of the ward roster: listen before you speak. Then she pinned it above the sluice sink, where every new girl would have to read it.
