Anatomical heart with roses on upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

A close view of the upper back shows an anatomical heart drawn in dark outline, with fine internal lines suggesting its chambers. Pink, yellow and peach roses, buds and green leaves spill out of the top of the heart. The soft painted colours contrast with the black linework, and the design sits centred on the shoulder blade against a blurred studio background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sketchbook had been left in the rose wagon when the carousel was sold off, and Nell found it on the third night of the Hull stop, under a tin of brass polish. Inside, on yellowed cartridge paper, a painter had drawn the same heart again and again: a fist of muscle, its chambers shaded in hard pencil, and from the top of each one a spill of roses that grew wilder page by page until the leaves ran off the edge.

Nobody on the fair remembered who had drawn them. Old Sorcha, who read palms beside the dodgems, said the painter had travelled with them one season and paid his lodging with pictures. He never sold a heart without a rose, she said, and the customers who wanted only the heart went home unhappy. Nell thought that was exactly the kind of thing Sorcha would say, and kept turning pages.

On the last page the outline had been inked over in black, firm and certain, and the roses painted in: a pale pink one, a yellow, a peach one open almost to the centre. Beneath them, in careful capitals, someone had written KEEP ONE THING GROWING. Nell packed the book into the wagon drawer, took it out again, and read the line twice.

At the last stop in Leeds she bought a single potted rose from a garden centre and set it on the wagon step. When she came out with the kettle at dawn, a bud that had been shut the night before had opened, pale as the paper, catching the first grey light over the empty car park.
