Anatomical muscle and bone tattoo on a foot

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a foot with a realistic tattoo depicting exposed muscle, tendons and bone-like structures across the top of the foot, extending towards the toes. The shading is smooth and detailed, with dark outlines, deep black shadows and lighter grey highlights giving the forms a three-dimensional look. The image is a close, slightly angled shot against a grey carpeted floor, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The mason at Corrow Keep had walked on his own feet for thirty years before he learned what they were made of. It was a surgeon from the coast who showed him, a man with a leather case and a drowned ferryman on his table, who laid the bones out on a cloth like a row of dice. The mason copied them onto the back of a lime sack with a burnt stick, the long pale bars running up under the skin and the cords that pulled the toes back toward the heel.

That winter the lord wanted the old road through the ruins paved again, every flag set straight. The mason agreed, but not the way it had always been done. He cut each slab to the shape he had drawn, so the stones of the foot fitted beneath the stones of the ankle, and the sinews ran from one to the next in grooves he filled with black pitch.

Travellers said the road hurt to walk on for the first week. Then their feet grew used to it and they stopped noticing. Only the old shepherd who came down from the fells each spring claimed he could feel the cords tightening as he crossed the yard, and he said it was like being carried.

When the mason died, his apprentice climbed to the top of the keep to measure the last courtyard. Under the moss she found a flagstone with a single toe cut into one corner, and beside it, worn smooth, a shallow hollow where a heel had been pressed a thousand times. She set her own foot in it, and it fitted.
