Realistic skeletal foot tattoo
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the top of a bare foot and shows exposed anatomy, with metatarsal bones, tendons and fleshy tissue rendered in lifelike detail. The shading moves from deep black in the recesses to pale grey and brownish highlights on the bone surfaces, giving a strong sense of depth and three-dimensionality. The design wraps around the foot from the toes toward the heel and is photographed against a plain grey floor with a metal ruler at the left edge.

The foot came to the wax room on a Tuesday, wrapped in oilcloth, with a note from the infirmary that said only *for demonstration, not for the lecture theatre*. Mr Hale unwrapped it with two fingers, the way a man lifts a letter he does not want to be seen reading. Ottilie had spent four years learning to lay beeswax thin enough to show lamplight through, and she had never been asked to make anything that looked so much like it might still walk.

She worked through the winter. The metatarsals came first, each one shaped from a cast and then hollowed so the wax would take the pigment properly. Tendons she laid by hand, single cords drawn over the arch and down into the toes, and where they met the bone she brushed umber into the recesses until they went nearly black. The high ridges she dusted with ochre and a little grey, so the light would catch them the way it catches old ivory. Hale stood at her elbow with the brass ruler and measured every joint twice, and never once asked whose foot it had been.
In February she found a name pencilled inside the oilcloth, a child's careful capitals, *ROSIE*, and beneath it a date from the year the Severn flooded the lock at Pill. She said nothing to Hale. That night she left the smallest toe unfinished, the nail still soft wax, and put a crumb of gold leaf on the bench beside it. In the morning the leaf had been swept into a saucer, and the toe had been finished, neatly, by someone whose hand she did not know.
