Bear paw tattoo on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bear paw print with toe pads and claw marks, drawn as if torn out of the skin with cracked, uneven edges. The shading is black and grey with strong contrast and soft gradients that give a three-dimensional effect. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame on the outer calf against a blue background, with a white trainer visible at the bottom right.

The bear came down from Sallow Fell every hard winter of the 1950s, and by the third week of February the whole of Scarth Hollow knew its tracks better than their own. Mr Dunmore at the smithy nailed a horseshoe over every door, and Mrs Carrick moved her hens into the scullery where nothing could reach them. Nobody had ever seen the animal. They only saw its prints in the snow beside the pens, five toes and a pad as broad as a dinner plate, with the claws pressed in ahead of them like a warning.

Eli Mawson, who was nine and had no sense, decided he would find it himself. He took his grandfather's lantern and a length of baler twine and climbed past the quarry in the blue dark. Under a shelf of rock he found the bear's hollow, but the bear was not in it. The frost by the entrance was scored with long grooves, and beside them lay a paw print so clean and deep it looked cut out of the ground, its edges cracked and lifted like the skin of a dried pond.
He knelt by it a long time, the lantern hissing. The tracks did not lead up the fell. They led down, one after another, towards the lights of the village, and each one was a little fainter than the last, as if the animal had grown tired of carrying itself.
He told no one but his grandmother, who only nodded and said the bear came down for the same reason it always had, to see whether the village still remembered how to leave a gate open. In the morning every horseshoe in Scarth Hollow hung turned face-down over its door, and across the lane lay one fresh paw print, pointing back towards the fell.
