Bear paw print on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A bear paw print sits on the calf, with toes and pad shaded to look pressed into cracked, uneven ground. Three claw marks run down from the top of the design, rendered with dark shading and highlights. The work is black and grey with soft gradients, and the composition is centred on the calf against a plain blue wall.

The mud had dried in plates by the time Marta found the track, and the print in the middle of the plates was the size of a winnowing tray. Five toes, the pad pressed deep as a thumb in dough, and above it three long scores where the thing had dragged its claws down the rock as if it meant to climb out of the ground.

Her grandfather said the bear had come down from the high pass in the spring, when the snow melt failed and the streams went to threads. Nobody in Corvan had seen it. They had only seen the cistern go dry and the goats grow thin. Marta carried water up the zigzag path every morning in two copper pails, and every morning the prints were a little further up the slope, as though the animal were walking ahead of the drought and leaving it behind.

On the ninth day she followed the track past the cairn at the top of the pass. The prints stopped at a shelf of grey stone where a spring had once run. Someone had left a clay bowl there, cracked and empty. She sat beside it and waited until the light went orange along the ridge. Nothing came. Only the wind pushed grit against her boots, and the cracks in the ground widened under her heel.

When she came down, both pails stood full beside the door. Her grandfather said nothing about it. He pressed his thumb into the wet mud by the trough and showed her the shape of a pad, five toes and a heavy palm, and beside it a single print of her own bare heel, sunk deeper than a heel ought to sink. 'It knows who carries the water,' he said, and went back to his pipe.
