Anchor and flower on an ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A small anchor is tattooed on the side of an ankle, with a pink five-petal flower curling around its shank. The anchor is shaded in grey with soft gradients and dark outlines, while the flower uses a flat pink fill with a pink accent on the anchor's crossbar. The plain dark background keeps the small design as the clear focus of the photograph.

Margaret had brought the photograph of her father's boat because Ruth had asked for it, and now the school hall smelled of warm squash and floor polish while nobody could find the raffle tickets. Ruth held the print at arm's length under the strip lights and squinted. "The Marigold, wasn't it? Your dad's boat?"

"Marigold Ann. He named her after Mum's bed of pinks at the back of the house." Margaret slid the print into her handbag, between the mints and the quiz programme. "He always said a boat needed something soft on it, or it was only a lump of iron that happened to float."
Ruth laughed, the same laugh from the back row of Mrs Pryce's classroom, and for a moment they were fourteen again, swearing they would sail past the breakwater the week they turned eighteen. Ruth had married a dentist from Bideford and had three grandchildren who never stopped. Margaret had stayed in Pellow Bay and kept the harbour office open until the council sold the lease to a man who sold gin.
Afterwards Margaret walked down to the slip in the cold, past the shuttered chandlery. The old fluke anchor was still propped by the bins where the fishermen had left it, its shank choked with rust and a volunteer of valerian pushing pale through the crack. She set the print on the flat stone beside it, weighted it down, and let the wind have the rest of the evening.
