Elephant with swirls on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line elephant with its trunk raised is drawn in black ink, with its body filled by curling spiral swirls. The linework is thin and even, and the design is shown in a close, slightly angled photograph of a bare foot and ankle. The image is in black ink only, with the tattoo centred on the lower part of the frame.

Dear Marian,

The night the lift broke on Ward Six I was stuck between the second and third floors with a porter called Ansel and a box of sterile gloves, and he told me the story of the elephant that carried the rain. You'll think I've lost the plot, but hear me out, because I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
His grandmother came from a village near Kerala, he said, where the monsoon was always late and the old elephant at the temple would lift its trunk to the clouds and wait. Nobody could make it rain. Rain came when it was ready, Ansel said, and the elephant only made the waiting bearable, spiralling its breath out in curls the way the children drew in the dust with sticks. Every curl was a sentence the elephant hadn't finished.
Then the lift shuddered, the engineer's voice came through the grille, and at half past four a girl from the paediatric bay found me with a crayon drawing of exactly that: an elephant, trunk up, its body full of spirals. She'd copied it from a tattoo her nurse had, she said, and the nurse had got it from her mum. Ansel laughed so hard he had to sit down on the trolley.
I still have the drawing pinned above my desk. Some nights the trunk looks like a question, and some nights like a hand held up to say wait a little longer. I think that's what the old elephant was for.
Love, Jo
