Dear Winnie, the kettle in the back kitchen has finally given up, so I am writing this at the scrubbed table with the window open and the gulls shouting over the harbour wall. You will laugh, but Mrs Pargeter asked me yesterday whether the twins were mine or the hotel's, and I said the hotel's, because they have been running up and down the landing since Easter as if they own the place. Mr Pargeter has taken to calling them the loop, because they go round and round and always end up where they started, like the wallpaper in room four.

The guests are kind. The couple from Leeds left a tin of shortbread and a note saying they had never seen a garden with so many sparrows in it. I have put the note on the mantel beside your postcard from Whitby. Your handwriting is worse than the sparrows, but I can read it well enough to know you are coming at the end of August, and that you will not be bringing that man with the moustache, which pleases me very much.

If you come early, come by the cliff path and not the road.
