Small swirl and dot tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo sits on the side of an ankle, made of a curling scroll, a looping stroke and a cluster of three dots. The lines are solid and even, with no shading, and the design is compact and centred on the skin. The photograph is taken close up against a dark background, and the tattoo is the clear focus.

The dust had been lifting off the tarmac all morning, curling in long scrolls behind the pickup until the wing mirror showed nothing but a brown wall. Hannah Wirrick kept her eyes on the white line and her hand on a bottle of water that had gone warm an hour ago. Three drops of rain had spattered the windscreen at the last fuel stop, the first rain she had seen since March, and she had not stopped thinking about them.

The garage at Tilley's Well had a dog asleep under the pump and a radio that only picked up one station, a man reading cattle prices in a flat voice. Her brother Sol had left a note under her wiper the week before. It said only: follow the road where the dust turns back on itself, then count three dry creeks. He had always written like a map-maker, all loops and no full stops.

She found the first creek bed, then the second, and a rusted gate with a strip of blue cloth knotted to the top bar. At the third, the track bent into a long curl around a salt pan, and the dust rose in one unbroken swirl that hung over the ground without falling. Beneath it sat a tin trough and three puddles, round as coins, holding pieces of the sky.

She knelt and touched the nearest one. It was cold. Sol had been here, and not long ago. She took the pen from her shirt pocket, drew the same curl on the back of his note, and pressed three small dots beneath it. Then she drove on with the window down, so the dust could come in.
