The rope came off the cutter on the last tide of October, forty fathoms of tarred manila coiled the wrong way round, and nobody on the Saltcombe quay could say who had ordered it. Ida Thorne, who had spliced every mooring in the harbour since her father's hands gave out, took one look at the coil and sent the boy for the marlinspike.

She worked through the afternoon with the tide sucking at the steps. The old anchor from the Gannet cottage stood propped against the wall, its ring worn smooth except for a small heart a deckhand had scratched into it in 1958, and she meant to bend the line through that eye and bring the end back under itself. A plain eye splice would hold a boat, she said, but a long splice lets the strain run round and round so no single strand ever has to bear it alone.

The boy asked why she didn't just cut the rope and tie it off like anyone sensible would. Ida spat over the wall. The ferry captain's widow had left the order in a biscuit tin with a note in pencil: make it so it never has to stop. So the rope went round the anchor, through the heart, out to the buoy, and back again in a figure of eight laid flat on the stone.

At dusk the boy walked the loop, counting the crossings with his thumb. Four, then eight, then he lost count where the two lobes met and simply kept walking, the way the tide does, until the lamp on the breakwater came on and he looked up to find he was back where he had started, and so was the rope.
