Anchor and infinity symbol design

Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a ship's anchor with its shank crossing a looping infinity symbol, with the anchor's arms curling into the lower loop. The linework is a single, even black stroke with smooth curves and small arrowhead-style tips at the ends of the anchor and the infinity line. It is a flat monochrome drawing centred on a white background with no shading.

The chart table had been wet since the Horn, and Maud Pelham had given up keeping her pencil marks dry. Her father's sextant lay in its box beside the lamp. Forty-one days out from Valparaiso, the *Esther Ruel* was running her easting down with nothing to show for it but grey water and a sky the colour of pewter.

Her brother Tom came down the companionway with two mugs of cocoa and set one by her elbow without a word. He had been sulking since the captain refused to put in at the Falklands. "They'll want the anchor down before the year's out," he said, nodding at the brass plate on the bulkhead. "Think they'll ever let it go?"

She traced the route with one finger: a long loop south, round the cape, and back up to the Thames. It had never once closed. Every harbour they touched sent them off again. When the anchor came up, it streamed weed, and the men hauled it hand over hand without singing, because the chain had got into the habit of coiling on deck in slow figures of eight that nobody wanted to undo.

On the last morning they came up the river to Gravesend in fog. The order came down and the anchor went over the bow with a roar that shook the rigging. Maud stood at the rail and watched the chain run out, link after link, until it lay across the grey water in one unhurried curve and settled into the mud. She found she could not tell where the journey ended and the way home began, and for once she did not reach for the chart.
