Anchor and palm tree ankle tattoos on a beach
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare ankles stand on wet sand with the sea behind them. The left ankle has a small black anchor topped with a heart, and the right has a slender black palm tree with a curved trunk. Both designs use thin, clean outlines with solid black fill and no shading, set against a soft, blue-toned beach scene.

The palm came off the Sunday boat from Tenerife, rolled in a sack of coconut husk, its fronds bent double like a man who had slept in a cupboard. Ada Penrose carried it up the harbour steps against her hip while her brother swore at the gulls. Nobody in Porthglas had ever grown anything taller than a gorse bush, and the whole street agreed the thing would be dead by Michaelmas.

She planted it in the yard behind the net loft, where the wind came in off the bay thick enough with salt to pickle herring. Each evening she walked down with a bucket of rainwater from the cistern, and each evening she found Tom sitting on the upturned coble, scraping a hook with a file. He had cut an anchor into the lintel of the loft door the summer their father drowned, and a heart above it, because their mother had insisted something should be kept on land.
By the autumn the palm had put out three new leaves, green as a wrasse's back. Tom watched her water it for a week and said nothing, which for Tom was a speech. Then on the first still morning he came down with his file and a tin of black pitch and asked where she wanted the tree drawn, so he could carry it wherever the boats went.
Ada chose the place on the trunk where the wind had bent it into a curve. When the pitch dried, Tom walked the harbour wall out to the fleet, and the palm stood in the yard with its head turned towards the water, as if it had been waiting all along to be asked to sail.
