Palm tree tattoo on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small palm tree is tattooed on the outside of a bare ankle, with a slender curved trunk rising to a cluster of dark fronds. The design is a solid black silhouette with soft edges and no shading, set against a blurred beach of turquoise sea and pale sand. The skin tone is warm and the ink is the only colour in the composition apart from the background.

Dear Len, The palm is still standing, before you ask. Mr Pargeter from the council came round in February with his clipboard, saying the frost had finished it off, and I told him to mind his own clipboard. I've wrapped its trunk in old hessian sacking every night since the first hard snap, the way you used to wrap the mooring ropes, and each morning I walk down the front before the ovens are lit to check whether the fronds have gone brown at the tips.

Father planted it on the lido wall in 1951 from a seed he'd carried home in his kitbag, and he told the whole street it would never take in our wind. It took. For seventy years it has leaned over the railings like it's waiting for a bus to Lisbon, and the lamp on the wall throws its shadow across the sand at four in the morning, long and black, so the gulls stand in it and don't know where to look.
Yesterday the tide went further out than I've ever seen it. Right beside the old trunk, where the sand is usually a foot deep, there was a second sapling, pale and bent, no taller than my hand. Nobody planted it. Somehow a seed must have dropped there years ago and waited for the sea to shift the sand off it. I've not told Pargeter. I think he'd want to put a fence round it.
I've shaped two rounds of the rye loaf into fans this week and left one on the wall for the gulls, which they tore apart before the sun was up. Come home at Easter if the boats allow it. Bring the old kitbag too, the one with the lining Father sewed up. I want to see if there's anything left inside. Love, Ada
