Crescent moon and sun mandala on calves

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare legs are photographed from behind, with the feet resting on a stone surface. On the left calf, a crescent moon is filled with a band of triangles, scrollwork and small vine-like motifs, while the right calf carries a radiating sun mandala with a circular inner pattern. A small, simple elephant outline sits on the right ankle, and all the ink is black with fine, even linework against the skin.

You learn the timetable of the moon before you learn the timetable of the trains. At Lanterne Halt the last up service leaves at ten past eleven, and by then the crescent is already low over the goods yard, its points of light caught on the iron of the signal gantry. Your job is to bar the ticket hatch, wind the clock in the booking office and write the night's weather in the register: nothing, mostly, and sometimes frost.

The circus train came through in March, eleven wagons behind a tired engine, and a boy from the last carriage jumped down to ask for water. He was carrying a paper elephant on a string, no bigger than your thumb, cut from an old handbill. He pressed it into your palm and said it would walk you home if you ever lost the line in the dark. You laughed and pocketed it, and it still lives in the till drawer beneath the change.

In April the sun came up over the embankment at the exact minute the first train was due, and the whole platform went gold, every tile and bench and rail. The light fanned out over the wet sleepers like the spokes of a wheel someone had drawn with a compass and a great deal of patience, and for a minute the station looked like a page of careful ornament.

Then the 6.02 pulled in, its doors sighed open, and nobody stepped down. You closed the register, wound the clock one more turn and set the little paper elephant on the sill facing east, where the moon would have to go round it to get home.
