Anchor and palm tree ankle tattoos on the beach
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare ankles are shown on wet sand with waves behind them. The left ankle carries a small black anchor with a heart-shaped loop at the top, and a multicoloured woven anklet sits beside it. The right ankle has a simple black palm tree with a slender trunk and fronds, drawn in clean linework with little or no shading.

The coconut came in on the spring tide the week the Gull failed to come home, and Mrs Oyelaran, who had never trusted the sea with anything she could keep, dug a hole above the wrack line and planted it in a fish box of sand. The village laughed. Palms did not grow on that stretch of coast, the wind was too cold and the shingle too thin, and everyone said so over the wall while she watered it from a tin mug.

It grew anyway, slowly and bent toward the water like something listening. The smith in the lower town made her a hook from the Gull's old anchor, which the nets had dragged up off the reef, and she had him weld a small loop at the crown so it could hang from a nail. She said a thing that is lost should at least be easy to find. Each spring she hung the anchor on the trunk and took it down again in autumn, and the rope scars on the bark turned grey and then went smooth.
Eleven years on, a fishing boat with a torn sail came round the headland at dusk. The man at the tiller had been adrift three days, and he said he had steered for one black shape on the skyline and nothing else. He was not her son. He was a stranger from the next bay, and he tied up under the palm because it was the only thing he could see. Mrs Oyelaran fed him bread and sent him home with a sprig of its fronds tucked under his oilskin, and the anchor stayed on the trunk, swinging a little in the wind off the sea.
