Dear Nell, the ice had gone off the cut by Tuesday, so Dad finally let me take the tiller through Hatton without him breathing down my neck. You'd have laughed. I bumped the lock gate twice and the lockkeeper called me Captain Nobody, which I think was meant kindly. The pink bow you sent me for my birthday is still tied round the brass lamp on the cabin roof. Mum says it looks like a wedding has happened to the boat, but I like it, and it stays where it is.

We moored above Knowle last night among the willows. Dad hung the old anchor off the bow the way he always does, and when I went to check the warp I found it had got a rag of ribbon caught on one fluke, bright as a sweet wrapper against all that black iron. He must have snatched it off the bunting when we left Birmingham. I didn't say anything. I just sat on the gunwale with my feet in the cold water and watched the bow turn slowly round the anchor, the way a boat does when nobody is steering it.

Here is the thing I meant to tell you before we went quiet on the phone. Dad is going to sell the boat in the spring. He's been ill, and the locks are getting heavy for him, and I said I'd find a buyer. I have been writing the advert in my head for a week. Yet every time I try to put the words down, I end up describing the anchor and the ribbon, and I cannot make the sentence stop there.

Come up in March, before the sale. Bring your camera. We'll tie the bow back on properly and take one photograph of it, so there's a record of the day it was still ours. Love, Ros.
