Small lotus tattoo on the inner forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, with its petals outlined and partly filled in solid black ink. The curved stem trails down and to the right, and the petals are shaded with a few grey tones. The flower is set against soft, blurred skin and a dark background, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The pond behind the mill had been dry since the spring the miller's daughter went to the city, and the reeds around it had gone the colour of old rope. Mother Ansel said the lotus would not open again until someone went down to the bottom and brought up what had been lost there. Nobody in Hollin Wood believed her, but they kept coming to look at the cracked mud anyway, the way people do.

It was Tomas the carter's boy who went down, because he was the only one small enough to fit through the sluice gate. He found a stone dish under the silt, and in the dish a single black seed, hard as a fingernail. He carried it up in his shirt and walked it through the wood to the old well where the village women drew water, and he set it on the lip of the stone. Nothing happened. Nothing happened for three days.
On the fourth morning there was a green stalk coming out of the well's mouth, bending down toward the water as if it had been looking for the way. By noon a flower had opened on it, dark at the heart and pale at the edges, like a lamp turned low. Mother Ansel came up the path with her basket and stood a long time without speaking. Then she put her hand on the boy's head and said the pond would fill when the rain came, and that the flower would stay as long as someone remembered to tell the water it was there.
