Small outline lotus flower tattoo

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small lotus flower drawn in a single black outline, with pointed petals fanning out from a central bud. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits on smooth, pale skin against a soft, out-of-focus background. The tattoo is centred in the frame and occupies only a small part of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moat of Veyrenne had not held water since my grandmother's time, only a green crust of silt and the old lotus roots that refused to die. The Queen's gardener, a stooped man called Osric Hale, said they were stubborn because they had never been meant to bloom in the dark. I believed him because I was twelve and he was the only person in the castle who let me carry his trowel.

When the Lord Chancellor ordered the moat filled with stone for a new wall, Osric went down the bank with a spade and a sack and began lifting roots by hand. Each one had a bud coiled tight beneath the mud, pale as a folded letter. He wrapped them in wet sacking and told me not to speak while we worked, because the roots could hear, and they did not like noise. I asked him what they wanted instead. He said they wanted to be left alone until the water came back, and he did not say whether he believed it would.

The Chancellor's men came at dawn with carts and a surveyor's chain. Osric stood between them and the last bank, a bucket of river water at his feet, and he did not move. When the surveyor told him to step aside, he only lifted the final bud out of the sacking and set it in the water. By noon, with the carts still waiting in the mud, its petals had opened one by one, sharp-tipped and dark-edged like a row of ink strokes against the grey stone. The Chancellor looked at it for a long while, then turned his horse around, and Osric winked at me over the rim of the bucket.
