The radio gives out somewhere past the last windmill on the Sable Flat road, and you let it. The silence has a note in it, a low tyre hum that climbs whenever the tarmac thins to gravel. Your uncle Teodor used to say every car on a desert road is playing one long chord, and you only have to find the key.

Forty miles on, a lorry sits on the verge with its hazards ticking. The driver, a man with a sunburnt neck and a paper map folded to a square, asks if you have jump leads. You do. While you crouch by his battery you hear him humming, badly, the same four bars over and over, and you realise it is the hymn your grandmother taught you on a piano in a house that no longer stands. You hum the counter-line without thinking. He laughs, and the sound is so surprised it carries across the flat.

When the engine catches he presses a folded sheet into your palm, the pencil smudged by his thumb. It is the tune written out, with a treble clef curled so tight at the top it looks like a heart someone started and could not finish. A single dot sits above it, where the breath should go.

You drive on with the sheet on the passenger seat. At the next petrol station you find a pencil in the glovebox and add the missing bar, then sit a while with the engine idling. The radio stays off. The windows stay down, and the road keeps its one long chord running all the way to the coast.
