Anchor and roses on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A grey-green anchor runs vertically down the thigh, with a coiled rope wrapped around its shank. Pink and cream roses, small blue flowers and green leaves climb around the anchor, with the largest rose at the top and a cluster at the lower left. The shading is smooth and soft, with pastel colours and highlights giving the flowers a dimensional, realistic finish.

Sit down by the stove, the lot of you, and keep your hands off the biscuits till I've finished. Every harbour has one thing it won't let go of, and ours was the anchor on the slipway at Pennick Quay, the winter the Mary Vell failed to come home.

Her skipper, Tobias Hale, had dropped that anchor in the lee of the Gull Rock with the wind backing, and the rope went taut and stayed taut. Mrs Ada Penrose, who kept the chandlery and never once wore black, went down at low water with a knife and a tin of cuttings. She twined the old hawser round the shank the way a sailor binds a splice, then pushed pink roses from her mother's wall into the crown of it, and cream ones she'd bought off a tinker at Michaelmas. Into every crack the barnacles had left, she tucked forget-me-nots.
Folk laughed. A harbour is no place for gardening, they said, and the sea would have the lot by spring. But the roses took. By June the anchor looked less like iron than like something that had grown there, and the boats came in past it knowing whose it was. Ada never called the rope a promise. She only said the hawser had never parted, and that a thing held that tight could bloom.
When she died, they hauled the anchor up onto the quay wall and left it there, flukes out, roses still climbing. The children climb it now. If you want to know why those roses never die, ask the anchor. It never let go, and nobody ever had to ask it to.
