Anchor and pink roses tattoo

Traditional · Colour · Photo

A grey anchor with a rope wrapped around its shaft runs diagonally through the design. Two pink roses with green leaves sit on the anchor, and a small pink flower with black outline appears at the base. Bold black outlines and smooth shading give the piece a classic look, set against a blurred, softly lit background.

The last train out of Saltmarsh Halt was already signalled when Eileen Coyle noticed the man at the end of platform two. He had a coil of tarred rope over one shoulder, as if he had come off a boat rather than a carriage, and he set a battered biscuit tin on the bench with the care of someone handling a sleeping cat. The tin rattled once and went quiet.

He asked her to keep it for him. Inside, she found pressed red roses gone the colour of rust, a brass cabin hook, and a folded chart of the Lizard with a ring drawn in pencil around a patch of open water. He said the Marigold had gone down there in March, and that his brother had been aboard. He had meant to take the tin inland to their mother in Derby, but he could not seem to make himself board a train that would carry him further from the sea.

Eileen wrote the tin into the lost property ledger with a stub of pencil, because that was the rule, and because it gave her hands something to do. The guard blew his whistle. The man stayed on the bench, one hand resting on the rope, watching the red tail lamp shrink down the line until the rails hummed and went still.

She put the tin on the shelf beneath the clock, where the morning sun would reach it first. The brass hook caught the lamplight and threw a thin, wavering shadow across the wall, and for a while she watched it hold steady, as if something beneath the water had decided to stay put.
