Anchor with roses on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large anchor wrapped in rope runs down the thigh, with pink and cream roses and small blue flowers climbing around the shank. The anchor and rope are shaded in soft greens and greys with smooth gradients, while the flowers use painterly colour blends. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a red background, with denim shorts visible at the top.

In the fishing village of Scarrow Haven, the smith Tobias Quaile forged an anchor for the Morning Star the winter his wife was expecting, and he swore it would hold whatever the sea could throw at it. The boat went out in March with his brother Daniel aboard. The weather turned off the Skerries, and no word came back after.

The anchor came up in a trawler's net the following autumn, far from the hard ground where it had been dropped. Tobias would not sell it or melt it down. He hung it from the gate of the rope-walk where the wind came in off the water, and his daughter Maud walked past it every morning on her way to school. She wound old hemp rope around the shank and tied it with the knots her father had taught her. In spring she pushed forget-me-not seeds into the cracks of the iron, and her mother planted pink roses at the foot of it.
Maud grew up and went to the city to work in a shoe factory, and the anchor stayed where it was. People in Scarrow said the iron never rusted through in the salt air, and that the flowers came back to the same bed each year without anyone tending them. Nobody told the story the same way twice, though everyone agreed about the rope.
When Maud came home at sixty to bury her mother, she found a boy sitting on the shank with a tin of seeds in his lap. He asked whether the roses were allowed to climb higher. She told him they were, and that the anchor had never once let go of anything it was given to hold.
