Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black anchor with a ring at the top and curved flukes sits on the outer side of an ankle and heel. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The anchor is centred in the lower half of the frame against a plain white textured background.

Dear Tom,

The ferry came in on Tuesday without you, which I suppose you knew it would. Mum has hung your oilskins back on their hook as if they might be needed, and I have not had the heart to move them. Old Hale says the swell off the Skerry has been running high since the equinox, so if you are still ashore in Lerwick, do not let anyone take the boat out on my account.

Walking the breakwater this morning I found the anchor again. You remember the one Dad scratched into the concrete post at the end of the slip, the year before he went? Someone has been at it with a penknife. The shank is deeper now, and the flukes curl the way they did on his drawing, though the lines are steadier than anything on this island could manage. I stood there a long while with the wind pushing at my coat, trying to decide whether it was a kindness or a trespass.

I did not put my hand on it. I thought of you reading this somewhere far off and wanting to know the exact weight of the thing, so I have tried to give it to you plainly: a small mark, black and unfussy, that does not care who is ready and who is not. Come home when the weather turns, and we will see whether it has got any smaller.

Yours, Ellen
