Small anchor tattoo on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black anchor tattoo with a heart shape near the top sits on the top of a bare foot. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading, and the ink looks crisp against the skin. The toes are painted red and the foot rests on a grey fabric background.

Dear Ivy, the bus from Seaham stopped twice on the hill road this week, so you'll forgive the blots. Your father has taken the night shift at the Pit again and says the cage has been stuck at the four-hundred level since Tuesday, which means the men stand about in the lamp room with nothing to do but smoke and talk about the sea. He wants to see the ships out at Sunderland before he dies, he says, and I told him he'd see nothing but coal dust if he went to the wrong quay.

Mrs Harker from number nine came round with a jar of pickled onions and asked after you. I told her you're in service in Newcastle and doing very well, which is true, though I didn't tell her the lady of that house counts the spoons twice. She showed me the small thing she had done on her ankle at the fair in Easington, a little black anchor with a heart caught on its crossbar, and she said the man who did it wouldn't take a penny because he said the anchor was for holding on, not for showing off. I thought that was a daft thing to say about ink but I've been turning it over since.

I've been sitting by the range with my own feet up on the fender, looking at the blue of the toes, and wishing you'd come home Sunday and sit with me while the kettle goes. Bring the red polish if you still have it. I'll let you do mine, the way you did when you were nine and wouldn't let me forget it. Write back soon. The post is slow but it always gets there.

Your loving mam, Edith
