Anchor, compass and ship's wheel on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black anchor with a rope wrapped around its shank sits over a black compass rose, and a red ship's wheel overlaps the lower half of the design. The linework is loose and sketchy, with heavier strokes on the anchor and finer lines on the compass points. Black ink dominates the upper motif while the wheel is done in a single red, and the piece sits centrally on the forearm against a plain background.

The Bramleys dropped early that August, bruising where they landed in the long grass, and Dad said we had three days before the wasps took the lot. He had me on the stepladder at the end of Hollow Row, where you could see a grey wedge of Channel over the hedge. He had been a mate on coasters out of Ramsgate for twenty years before his knees gave out, and he still couldn't stand in a field without checking the wind.

"Hold the bag open, Nell," he said. "Not like that. Like you mean it." I held it while he handed the fruit down one at a time, testing each with his thumb as if it might answer back. Behind us, in the open shed, hung the last of what he'd brought home from the ships: a brass compass with the glass gone milky, and a spoked wheel no bigger than a dinner plate that he had bolted to the kitchen wall until Mum made him take it down.
We worked until the light turned the colour of weak tea. He told me about the night off the Goodwins when the cable parted and the anchor went over with a noise like a church bell, and how the skipper had put the wheel over by hand because the steering had given up. "Every knot in that rope is a promise," he said, "and you have to let them go eventually." I thought he meant the anchor. I thought he meant the rope.
At the gate he pressed the compass into my palm, cold as a coin. The needle had stuck years ago and never freed itself. I still have it. It doesn't point north, but if I shake it gently, sometimes it remembers where it wants to go.
