Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows an anchor with its shank looped by an infinity symbol, with the script words "i refuse to sink" running diagonally beneath it. The linework is crisp and even, with solid black strokes for the anchor and thinner strokes for the infinity loop and lettering. The tattoo is shown in close view on the inner wrist against a plain light background.

Ada had the chain across the trestles before the kettle boiled, the way she had every morning since the Harbour Board stopped paying a man to do it. Gulls walked the wet stone between the coils. Her son Tom was one of them. He had taken the lifeboat's spare mooring out to the buoy the afternoon before, and the glass had been falling since. By dusk the storm had come round the headland, and the anchor had started to drag. Ada stood at the end of the pier with a torch she didn't need and watched the single light bobbing where the sea turned white.

She had marked that anchor herself, the winter Tom was born. She had bound the shackle with copper wire, twisted it round and round into a loop that lay on its side like the number eight, so she could tell it from the others in the locker. The men on the slipway said the old shackle would part under that strain. Ada said nothing and kept her hands in her coat.

It held. At first light the boat came in low and grey, its crew too tired to cheer. Tom stepped onto the stone, looked at the anchor lying on the trestles, and laughed at the wire. Ada took the chain from him, hung the loop where the sun could catch it, and reached for the kettle again.
