A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flour was still warm from the sack when Hanne pressed the knife into the first loaf of the morning and began to draw. Old Tobias kept the oven on Marrow Lane, and he had taught her that a loaf marked with a letter told the village who had baked it. He had only ever cut one word himself, and he cut it slowly, the blade doubling back on itself so the letters ran together like thread dropped on the board. When she asked what it said, he told her to wait until the bread was out.

The loaves came out in the grey hour, before the carts started rattling over the cobbles. Tobias took a cracked cup from the shelf, dipped a fingertip in the beetroot juice he used for the Sunday buns, and touched a single red dot above the first letter of his word. "That is where it starts," he said. "Everything after has to be true to the start." Hanne read it with her lips moving. Beautiful. She said it was a strange thing to put on bread. He said the bread was not the point. The woman who would carry it home at six, with cold hands and a sick husband, would need to read it before she could eat.

Hanne carried the baskets out that morning and handed them through the doors one by one. Each woman turned her loaf over, read the marks, and looked up at the bakery window as if someone might be standing there. Nobody was. Tobias had gone back to his proving trays.

When the bells rang six, Hanne found the cracked cup washed and upturned on the step, and the beetroot tin wiped clean. She did not ask who had taken the last loaf from the sill. She only ran her thumb along the one unscored crust she had kept for herself, and found it already softened, as if someone had held it for a long time before setting it down.
