Small anchor tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple anchor is tattooed in dark ink on the inner forearm, near the wrist. The linework is solid and uniform in black, with no visible shading. A silver anchor bracelet with a red and white rope cord sits on the wrist in the foreground, and the background is softly out of focus in muted purple and grey tones.

The anchor came up off the mud still wearing its crust of weed, and Mr Haskett swore at it the way he swore at anything he loved. Nell held the lantern while he worked the flukes free of the chain, her fingers numb inside the wool mitts she had taken from the lost property box at the harbour office.

Her brother had gone over the side of the Constance Mary in February with a line round his waist and a bottle of gin in his coat, and nobody had found him. The tide had given back only the anchor. Haskett carried it up the quay to the ropewalk where Nell's mother twisted hemp for a living, and set it down on the boards between them like a guest nobody had invited.
Her mother did not laugh when Nell asked for a cord. She sat with a length of red and white marline across her knees, laying up the strands tight the way the Constance Mary's crew had always wanted them, and then she tied the knot Tom had taught Nell as a girl, the one that holds when everything else lets go. Haskett pricked a small anchor into soot and gin with a sail needle, one stab at a time, and said it was the only mark he would ever allow himself.
Nell took the cord down to the slipway at low water and wound it round the iron shank where the tide would rust it slowly and nobody would think to take it off. When the boats came in that autumn, she would tell anyone who asked that the knot was her brother's, and that he had only gone on ahead to tie the next one.
