Sailboat and clouds on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small sailboat with two sails sits on wavy lines of water, with two small clouds drawn above it. The tattoo is made of thin, even black outlines with no shading, and the design is shown in a single dark ink. The close crop places the tattoo centre left against a plain white background, with a hand holding the arm at the lower edge.

The wind dropped on the third night out of Falmouth, and you lay awake in the forepeak listening to the hull knock against nothing. Ottoline had told you that calms were the sea's way of making you wait, and you had not believed her, because you were twenty and had read every book about the Atlantic the harbourmaster's wife would lend you.

By the sixth day the logbook had gone soft at the corners from your damp thumbs. You wrote the hours down in pencil: wind south-west, four knots, then nothing, then a long grey swell lifting the boat like someone breathing under a sheet. Ottoline ate her tinned peaches standing at the tiller and talked about her late husband's hands, which could tie a bowline in the dark but could not, she said, carry a cup of tea without slopping it.
On the ninth morning two small clouds pulled up over the horizon, fat and white as sugar, and beneath them the sea went the colour of slate and then of silver. You trimmed the main while Ottoline hauled on the jib, and the boat leaned and found her feet again, and for an hour you sailed straight at a shape of land you could not yet see.
That night you opened the log to the last empty page and drew the boat in one unbroken line, sails up, waves beneath, the two clouds above it like afterthoughts. Ottoline read it upside down over her cocoa. 'You've left out the sun,' she said. 'Sun's for postcards,' you told her, and she laughed so hard she had to put the mug down.
