Compass rose and script on forearm and wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person's forearms with their hands held out, showing a black compass rose with N, E, S and W markings on the left inner forearm. A small cursive script tattoo in black sits on the right wrist. The linework is fine and clean with light shading in the star points, and the image is bright and neutral with the ink as the main focus.

Edith Garrow inked a compass rose into the corner of every chart she drew, a habit her father had beaten out of his apprentices but never out of her. The rose sat in the lower left of the sheet, its eight points crisp as frost, with north always pointing to the top of the page where the Admiralty wanted it. That morning the rose was the only part of the survey she still trusted.

Thomas Lusk came up the stairs of the chart-house at seven with a tin of wet sand and a grievance. The sounding he had taken off the Scar showed nine fathoms where her survey said four. "Either the lead lies or your ink does," he said, and dropped the tin on her table so the sand spilled across the coast of Yorkshire. She told him to fetch the lead. They went out on the grey tide in a borrowed coble, Edith holding the line while Thomas paid it out and called the marks through the spray.

The lead touched stone at four fathoms, exactly where she had drawn it. Thomas swore, then laughed, then swore again at himself for laughing. Back in the chart-house Edith pinned the sheet flat under the lamp and did not change a single line. Instead she wrote, small and beneath the rose, the hour, the depth and the words Thomas had used. Some things a chart could only keep by admitting that it was a guess, and that the sea had been listening all along.
