Sailing ship on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed sailing ship with full sails, flags and a banner on the hull is tattooed on the inner wrist and lower forearm. The linework is fine and dark with light hatching in the sails and waves, and the ink is black and grey. The ship sits centrally on the skin, with a sleeve of black fabric above and a red top beside it, and a hand holding the wearer's hand below.

The banner on the Ada Seaward has faded to the colour of weak tea, so by the time the tide turns you have read its name aloud four times to Mr Pruett, who keeps the harbour book and will not enter a ship on anyone's word but her own. You stand on the quay at Gullmouth with a coil of tarred line over one shoulder and your cap pushed back, watching the mainsail go up in folds that look, from here, like stacked linen.

Nobody in the town expects her back. She went out in the autumn with a hold of salt cod and a boy who had never seen open water, and the boy was your brother, which is why you keep the tide tables in your own hand. Each evening you chalk the wind on the slate outside the chandlery: south-west, backing, then nothing at all. The gulls on the breakwater have learned to sit still while you do it.
In the third week of November a sail shows past the Ness, but it is wrong. Its topsails are patched in cloth the colour of a robin's breast, and there is a flag at the masthead that no one in Gullmouth has ever flown. You run down the slipway with the line still on your shoulder, and Pruett comes behind you, saying the name under his breath as though it might change its mind.
The boy who steps off the gangplank is taller than you remember and carries no chart of anywhere. He unrolls the banner from under his arm, torn at one corner, and says the hull can be repainted in any name you like, so long as you spell it right this time. You tell him the ledger is already written. He laughs, and the wind comes round into the south-west at last.
