A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Ellis boy came up the quay steps at six with a tin of paraffin and a face like wet slate, and Maud knew before he spoke that the Grace had gone onto the Haddock Bank in the blow. Nobody said it. They stood about the net loft with their hands in their pockets while the tide turned under the boards, and Maud went to the back shelf where her father kept the spare shackles, because her hands needed something to do that was not shaking.

The anchor was there, wrapped in oilcloth. It was the old one from the Grace's first season, the one he had painted grey himself the winter before he died, the shank still bearing the small chalk mark where he had measured her length for the mooring. Maud had always thought it ugly. Too big for the shelf, too heavy for any sensible boat. She had asked him once why he kept it when the new one was lighter, and he had said that a family was not a thing you carried for weight.

She carried it down to the slip herself. Nobody tried to stop her. The men fell in behind, Ellis and his brother and old Tom with his bad knee, and they walked the length of the harbour wall in the grey light, the anchor resting on her shoulder like a yoke. At the end of the wall she set it down, wiped her palms on her trousers and looked out past the breakwater to where the Grace sat low and tilted on the bank, her mast still standing.

"Right," Maud said. "Who's got a line?"

They had a line. They always had a line.
