Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The design shows the word Always in flowing black cursive script. The capital A is replaced by a triangle with a circle and a vertical line set inside it. The linework is clean and even, with heavier strokes on the letters and finer lines on the symbol, and the design sits alone on a plain white background.

The hall smells of squash and floor polish, and the name badges are printed in a font that makes everyone look like someone's cousin. You find Priya by the urn before you find yourself in the room. She still holds her cup the way she did in Year Nine, two fingers under the handle, as if it might bolt.

The two of you were the ones who drew on everything. Pencil cases, the insides of maths books, the back of a bus ticket. The sign you made up was a triangle with a circle set inside it, a single line dropped through the middle, and beside it the word always, because that was the promise you made on the wall behind the sports hall: you would meet at the old well at the end of the summer, whatever happened. You never did. Priya's family moved to Leeds in July, and the letters stopped halfway down the second page.

Tonight she asks whether you still go to the well. You say you drove past it in March and it has a fence round it now. She laughs, then stops laughing. She opens her handbag and takes out a folded napkin, the same thin paper they hand out with the sausage rolls, and on it she has drawn the symbol in biro, neat as a rubber stamp, with the word beneath it in the careful loops she never lost.

You take the pen. You draw the line through the circle the way you did at eleven, then write this year's date underneath and slide the napkin back across the table. Neither of you says the word. Across the hall someone starts the slideshow, and the first photograph is of the two of you, squinting, in front of that wall.
