Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black anchor with a thin ring at the top and a solid, tapered base sits centrally on the lower leg. Behind the anchor, loose watercolour splashes in orange, pink, purple and teal fade out across the skin. The composition is centred and the photograph is taken straight on against a pale background.

The Ambrose travelling show had crossed four counties by the winter the elephant died, and by then few of the children could say why the old ship's anchor hung above the ring gate. Grandmother Hepzibah Ambrose said it came off a collier that broke its back on the Whitby sands the year her own mother was born. She said the family had carried it inland ever since because a people who had once seen the sea should always keep one thing that remembered it. Each spring someone dabbed a little more paint onto the iron where the sunsets had run down the rusted flukes, and the colours grew thicker and stranger.

When the money ran out the wagons went first, then the horses, then the striped tent with its patches. The anchor was the last thing left that a buyer wanted to take. A scrap man from Hull came out to the field with a cart and offered eleven pounds for it, and the boy Tobias, who was nine and had never been further than the next town, told him no and then could not say why. That night he unhooked the anchor from the gate, dragged it across the stubble on a length of rope, and hauled it all the way to the edge of the marsh where the land ran out in grey mud.
He dug the flukes into the wet sand and sat beside it until the tide turned. The water came in slow and cold, lapping over the iron, and the old paint loosened and bled out in threads of orange, pink and green. By morning the whole shore was streaked with colour, and the sea had taken the anchor's colours the way it had once given them up.
Tobias walked back to the empty field with the rope over his shoulder. The family followed him to the marsh a week later, and they stood where the tide had been, looking at the water.
